You’re giving Ottawa students the skills they need to succeed

November 21, 2017 / General

When students need help to be successful,
you give them access to the critical resources they need!

Your support of the Ottawa Network for Education (ONFE) has a tremendous impact on Ottawa’s students by helping children and youth overcome barriers to learning and plan for the future. You ensure they have the skills they need to leave school prepared for the next chapter of their lives.

Let’s follow a day in the life of an Ottawa student to see the incredible programming you make possible!

8am: Shortly before the bell rings, and classes begin, more than 13,500 children and youth start their school day with a healthy meal provided by the Ottawa School Breakfast Program. With 1 in 5 children living in poverty, this program helps students start their day ready to learn and on equal footing with peers.

10am: Hundreds of students who need one-on-one support to learn successfully, are paired with a caring, trained volunteer through the Ottawa Volunteers in Education program! Each year over 1,500 community volunteers give Ottawa students the individual attention they need to develop age-appropriate literacy and numeracy skills, to increase self-esteem and self-confidence, and to support a variety of learning challenges.

1pm: It’s time to get growing! Students in Grade 3 classrooms around the city tend to indoor gardens where they grow vegetables from seed, and learn about plants, nutrition, healthy eating, and entrepreneurship through ONFE’s newest program, Classroom Gardens. Students have the opportunity to eat the food they grow, and share it with their friends, family, and the broader community.

4pm: School may be over, but the learning doesn’t end for students enrolled in the JA Company after-school program. During this 15-week program, groups of students work together to create and run a real business. Last year, JA teams created 20 new businesses and developed entrepreneurial skills that will last a lifetime!

These are just a few of the invaluable initiatives that Ottawa students can access because of you. We can’t thank you enough for equipping Ottawa’s students with the supports and tools they need to be successful.

Please join us next Tuesday, November 28th as we celebrate GivingTuesday, the official kick-off to the holiday giving season!

Together, we can ensure all students have the chance to be successful in school.
