Volunteer Opportunities with JA Company Program

Inspire students to become Canada’s next entrepreneurs

Help build a more creative, resilient, and resourceful workforce 

JA Company Program inspires high school students to create an enterprise of their own. Over the course of the program, students experience how a small enterprise functions by collaborating with peers and volunteer Business Advisors to design, organize and operate a real business.

As a volunteer Business Advisor you faciliate the JA Company program and act as a mentor and resource to the students. JA Ottawa provides volunteer Business Advisors with extensive training and all program materials as well as ongoing support.

JA Ottawa has 3 streams of JA Company program:

After-School
1 day per week | after school | 3 hours | 18 weeks 

Students meet once a week to create and operate their business. These programs are fully facilitated by a team of 2-4 volunteer Business Advisors. These volunteers do not need to attend each week, but can create a schedule to ensure that 2 volunteers are present each week.

Fall 2017: programs begin the week of October 10

Volunteer needs: 10+ Business Advisors, locations across the city  

Co-op
1 afternoon per week| | 3 hours per week |15 weeks
  

JA Company Program Co-op offers students a
teamwork-based experiential learning opportunity in an environment where they will gain valuable employment skills while they learn about entrepreneurship by creating an enterprise of their own.  In the JA Company Co-op program,students will collaborate with students from other schools/school boards as they gain skills they can apply to their work placement and learn about entrepreneurship as a viable career option.
 The Co-op program is fully facilitated by a team of 2-4 volunteer Business Advisors. These volunteers do not need to attend each week but can create a schedule to ensure that 2 volunteers are present each week to deliver the program.

Programs begin on September 20, 2017 and on February 21, 2018

Volunteer needs: 3 Business Advisors, at 900 Morrison Drive location

In-School
Occasional/on-call | regular class time | over a 10-12 week period
  

 JA Company In-School programs are incorporated into various Business classes (Marketing, Entrepreneurship, and Business Management Leadership) and led by the classroom teacher with JA Ottawa support. JA Company In-School Skills-Based Mentors visit the class for approximately one hour, on an as-needed basis to share their expertise in a particular field and provide feedback and insight into the JA Company. We are seeking Skills-Based Mentors in the following fields: Production, Innovation, Leadership, Human Resources, Marketing, Finance and Sales.

  • Provide 2 references  (who have known you for 2 years) 
  • Contact Program Manager for a phone conversation to review the program and volunteer expectations 
  • Schedule an in-person interview (30 minutes) at 205-900 Morrison Drive, Ottawa
  • Obtain a police records check for the vulnerable sector
