Volunteer Opportunities with JA Company Program

Inspire students to become Canada’s next entrepreneurs

Help build a more creative, resilient, and resourceful workforce 

JA Company Program inspires high school students to create an enterprise of their own. Over the course of the program, students experience how a small enterprise functions by collaborating with peers and volunteer Business Advisors to design, organize and operate a real business.

As a volunteer Business Advisor you faciliate the JA Company program and act as a mentor and resource to the students. JA Ottawa provides volunteer Business Advisors with extensive training and all program materials as well as ongoing support.

JA Ottawa has 3 streams of JA Company program:

After-School
1 day per week | after school hours, after 3pm | 3 hours | 15 weeks

Students meet once a week to create and operate their business. These programs are fully facilitated by a team of 2-4 volunteer Business Advisors. Volunteers do not need to attend each week but can create a team schedule to ensure that 2 volunteers are present each week.

February 2017: programs begin the week of February 13, 2017

  • University of Ottawa – Makerspace (Downtown): Monday from 4:00pm-6:30pm
  • Canterbury High School: Wednesday from 4:00pm-6:30pm

Volunteer needs:  10+ volunteers
*additional program sites may be added.

Co-op
1 half day per week (AM or PM) | during school hours | 3 hours per week |17 weeks

JA Company Program Co-op offers students a teamwork-based experiential learning opportunity in an environment where they will gain valuable employment skills while they learn about entrepreneurship by creating an enterprise of their own.  In the JA Company Co-op program, students will collaborate with students from other schools/school boards as they gain skills they can apply to their work placement and learn about entrepreneurship as a viable career option.

The Co-op program is fully facilitated by a team of 2-4 volunteer Business Advisors. Volunteers do not need to attend each week but can create a team schedule to ensure that 2 volunteers are present each week to deliver the program.

February 2017: programs begin on February 15, 2017

  • Wednesday from 12:30pm-3:30pm at 205-900 Morrison Drive

Volunteer needs: To be determined

In-School
1 day per week | during class time during traditional work hours | 15 weeks

JA Company In-School programs are incorporated into various Business classes (Marketing, Entrepreneurship, and Business Management Leadership) and led by the classroom teacher with JA Ottawa support. JA Company In-School Skill Based Advisors visit the class for one hour 1-3 times per semester to share their expertise in a particular field and provide feedback and insight into the JA Company. We are looking Advisors in the following fields: Production Innovation, Leadership, Human Resources, Marketing, Production, Finance and Sales. Please read the full job description for details.
