Growing Knowledge: Plantaform Smart Indoor Gardening Units and ONFE’s Classroom Gardens
Imagine a classroom where science, sustainability, and the joy of growing food come together in a single, hands-on experience. At the Ottawa Network for Education (ONFE), we believe in sowing the seeds of lifelong learning through immersive experiences. Since the 2016-2017 school year, our Classroom Gardens program has provided students with learning opportunities that grow food from seed to plant and bring the curriculum to life.
To further enhance Classroom Gardens offerings, last year we test piloted Plantaform’s Smart Indoor Garden in a high school classroom. This year, we are excited to take our program to the next level with the introduction of eleven Plantaform units in various schools across Ottawa.
Why Classroom Gardens Matters
Research shows that experiential learning, especially through gardening, helps students develop essential skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, and responsibility. Classroom Gardens engage students of all ages in everything from biology and environmental science to math and art.
For students who may struggle with traditional classroom learning, these interactive gardens offer alternative ways to connect with the curriculum. Watching plants sprout, grow and then be harvested to eat, fosters patience and nurtures a sense of accomplishment and responsibility.
The Future of Indoor Gardening
With the addition of Plantaform’s Indoor Garden units to Classroom Gardens, ONFE is bringing the future of gardening directly into classrooms. These sleek, self-sustaining indoor gardening units use fogponic technology, smart monitoring, and energy-efficient LED lighting, making it easier than ever to grow herbs, fruits and vegetables throughout the school year.
Learning from Smart Indoor Gardens
Integrating smart gardens, like Plantaform’s, enhances learning by offering real-time data on water levels, keeps track of the plant’s growth cycle, reminds the user when to harvest and clean the tower, and knows what you are growing, adjusting the instructions for growing to maximize the growth of the selected plants.
Growing Engaged Learners
Through the Classroom Gardens program, we’ve seen how gardening cultivates more than just plants—it nurtures cooperation and curiosity among students. Teachers have already shared their excitement about these new units, and students are eager to take on the role of mini horticulturists—and it’s only the beginning! We can’t wait to watch students’ enthusiasm grow alongside their plants.
“We love the look and feel of the rejuvenate! It’s easy to use, and the growth is quick. It’s an excellent addition to our classroom” – Teacher, Ottawa Catholic School Board
Watch our social media channels for updates as we continue to install and monitor Plantaform’s Smart Indoor Garden units across Ottawa schools. We look forward to sharing stories of student success and the joy of gardening with smart technology.
Help us plant the seeds of change by sponsoring a garden in a classroom or donating today—every contribution brings more indoor gardens into Ottawa classrooms, inspiring future generations of eco-conscious learners.
