Tell us a little bit about yourself

Born and raised in India within a supportive family environment, I was fortunate to have two siblings with whom I shared my childhood. Completed my schooling, and higher education and eventually started my career because of my father’s forward-thinking attitude and my mother’s strong support. Beyond academics, I had a passion for sports, particularly badminton, which I pursued from my school time and enjoy now as well. I also enjoy music, crafting, and gardening.

A significant milestone in my life was migrating to Dhaka, Bangladesh, after marrying a Bangladeshi. There, I embarked on a career in the higher education sector as an Economics faculty. My engagement extended beyond teaching; I was actively involved in extracurricular activities, community service, social work, and entrepreneurship initiatives.

I am a proud mother of a son and the wife of a supportive husband. And my days are never complete if I do not talk with my mother.

In 2023, a new chapter began with my move to Ottawa, Canada. This transition introduced me to a society rich in diversity and cultural vibrancy.

What made you decide to volunteer with the Volunteers in Education program?

I believe in giving back to society and feel it is my responsibility, I have turned to volunteering in Ottawa and this led me to the Ottawa Network for Education’s adult education program and Junior Achievement (JA) Ottawa entrepreneurship program, leveraging my background in higher education and business. The support from Jolly Bimbachi, ONFE, has been incredibly motivating, enhancing my experience. Working in adult education, especially with migrants from diverse backgrounds, has been challenging but rewarding. Tessa Webster, from Albert Street Education Centre in particular, has been inspirational with her patience and empathetic approach to teaching English, making it a rewarding learning experience for me. Similarly, my passion for entrepreneurship drew me to JA Ottawa, where mentoring young, eager minds and peers has been equally motivating.

Who was your favourite teacher and why?

Ms. Sushma, my high school Economics teacher, profoundly influenced my academic path. Her exceptional teaching style and passion for the subject were pivotal in my decision to master Economics.

What is your personal philosophy on life?

I believe in hard work and sustainable living. We should try our best and never give up.

If you could go back to a particular grade level or childhood age, which would it be and why?

To my high school Class 11, was a profound period of learning and the best time of my life.

What is your favourite hidden gem in Ottawa?

Strathcona Park, located in the Sandy Hill part of Ottawa, along the Rideau River.

Tell us about a lesson you learned this year. What did it teach you about yourself?

Life often brings challenges and transformation and we make decisions that have an opportunity cost. Nevertheless, these moments serve as valuable lessons, teaching us to become stronger and try hard to achieve our best.
